This week’s Big Issue is a fascinating one with the headline ‘The Great Green Debates”. The issue (April 13-19 2009, No 842) features an interview with 90 year old Gaia theory and scientist James Lovelock whose early warnings of global climate change were often mocked (but are now widely accepted) as well a very interesting article on food miles from Matt Ford who examines some of the myths and realities in the complex world of environmentally friendly food shopping. Jim Pickard eamines why the UK government’s ‘green revolution’ is far from reality and Rob Holdway from Giraffe looks as adapting for climate change as well as setting out seven simple tips for reducing environmental impact including food planning, washing at lower temperatures, cycling, insutaing homes and avoiding flying. The Big Issue big up their eco-friendly conference centre, Pines Calyx, refuting claims that environmentally friendly housing is too expensive and Laetitia Maklouf explains her life long love of plants. This AND arts, film, TV, music, books, competitions, theatre, jobs and homeless issues – its a must at £1.50!
