Boris's bikes - ready, willing and able!

The Mayor of London’s bicycle borrowing scheme has already launched in London with the first cycles being used by curious consumers (and media folk) to cycle around central London.

The Mayor admitted that the new scheme  would experience a series of teething problems as it was rolled out and he conceded that cyclists could face a shortage of bikes and could have problems returning them to the ‘docking stations’ throughout the city.

More than 1,300 of the 6,000 bikes were not ready for hire when hire began this morning, while about a quarter of the 400 docking stations aren’t completed – but with docking stations and hire bicycles will be available in Camden, City of London, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Kensington and Chelsea, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Westminster and several of the Royal Parks (see https://web.barclayscyclehire.tfl.gov.uk/maps# ) and Mr Johnson  said he was sure that the scheme would be successful in the long run with up to 40,000 joureys a day being made.

The scheme will be available to those who sign up for membership. They will then receive a key which costs £3, with membership costing at £1 for 24-hours, £5 for seven days and £45 for a year. The first 30 minutes of any journey will be free, and the next 30 minutes will cost £1, with rising costs for longer journeys. The keys needed to run the bikes  need to be activated. So far 4,000 people have  a working key although 10,000 have registered
