Food scraps and farm waste used for energy

Plans are afoot to build more than 1000 anaerobic bio-digesters to turn unwanted food and farm waste into energy and fertiliser. Jane Kennedy, the Environment Minister, has launched a study into identify where and how the digesters can be used and hopes that agreements with the National Farmers Union and others in agriculture will lead to 1000 digesters in use by 2020 as well as extending the project to the water industry who deal with 1.73 million tonnes of sewage sludge annually.  If all food organic waste was recycled this way enough energy would be produced to provide heating and lighting for 2 million homes.
